Hi there, my name is Abby O'Connor, and I am excited to get to know you! I am a licensed professional counselor and have a master's degree of Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Ohio University and am currently enrolled at PennWest University to become dually licensed as an art therapist. I also earned my B.A. in psychology and art from The Ohio State University.
I enjoy working with clients of all ages and love providing a safe, inclusive environment for anyone and everyone. As part of the LGBTQ+ population, I strive to be a support to the community. I deeply value the concept of identity and who we are in the world along with who we want to be. I also work with individuals who are navigating life with chronic illness, helping to nurture confidence and self-advocacy in the medical system.
In therapy with me, one can expect a creative and inviting approach, not one that is strictly talking. It's hard to be human and use words to describe our feelings and thoughts, which is where art comes into play! You may be asking, "Do I need to be an artist or be creative to use this type of therapy?" The answer is no! The use of visual expression is part of the human experience and is considered common language no matter what background someone possesses. Though I also understand that engaging in creativity is a vulnerable process, my goal is to offer you support by walking along side you.
Art therapy techniques aren't the only thing offered in my therapy room. I also engage in narrative therapy, offering empowerment through storytelling. For example, I have used Dungeons & Dragons to create campaigns for therapy sessions, allowing clients to process internalized struggles and emotions by taking control of their story.
In addition to creative processes, I offer talk therapy utilizing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Gestalt Therapy, Internal Family Systems (IFS), Person Centered, and Positive Psychology. My experience includes working with individuals with anxiety, depression, trauma, grief and loss, identity concerns, life stressors, ADHD, and adjustment. My ultimate goal is to offer a warm, safe, and non-judgmental environment to fully express oneself, even when the world feels unsafe at times.
